Golden Ticket

I was delighted last night Paul Dunne received an invite in the U.S Amateur, such a prestigious event and another box ticked in the Amateur game.

But I couldn't help thinking what would happen if he were to guide his way through the hardest field in unpaid golf and win ! The champion receives an automatic invitation to play in all of the majors except the PGA Championship....

That is if you stay Amateur!! As Paul is due to turn Pro after the Walker Cup would he be willing to give up the Golden Ticket that is an Invite to The Masters?

I think if it was only an invite to both Open's it wouldn't even been a question but as everyone knows The Masters is the most exclusive club of them all. And even if Paul had a couple of great early professional seasons he's not guaranteed that famous letter from the commitee at Augusta National.

Prime example of this is Shane Lowry, one of our most consitent golfers since his fantasy win in The Irish Open in 2009, he only made the drive down Magnolia Lane this year.

I personally think Paul should have turned pro the day after The Open but I wonder would a guarentee of playing for The Green Jacket make him wait another 8 months before going into the paid ranks?

Winning the event, involves playing well enough over 36 holes to qualify for the matchplay. Then you've got to win 5 18 hole matches and then a cruelling 36 hole hole final. Easy Right?

So fingers crossed Paul has to ask himself the million dollar question!

What would you do?
